If your dryer used to finish a load in 45 minutes and now takes two full cycles, the dryer is usually not the problem. The vent is. In Skokie and Des Plaines we see the same pattern over and over: an older home with the laundry in the basement, a long flexible duct snaking through joists to reach an exterior wall, and years of lint packed into every bend.

This matters for two reasons. The boring one is money — a restricted vent can add 25-50% to the run time of every load, which shows up on your ComEd and Nicor bills. The serious one is fire. Clothes dryers are a leading cause of home fires, and failure to clean the vent is the leading cause behind those fires. Lint is essentially kindling, and a blocked vent traps heat right next to it.

Warning Signs Your Dryer Vent Is Restricted

The obvious ones

  • Clothes are still damp after a full cycle, or you routinely run two cycles.
  • The laundry room gets hot and humid while the dryer runs. That moisture should be leaving the house.
  • The outside of the dryer is hot to the touch.
  • A burnt or musty smell during or after a cycle.
  • The dryer shuts off mid-cycle — many modern units have a thermal cutoff that trips on overheating.

The ones people miss

  • No visible lint or airflow at the exterior hood. Go outside while the dryer runs. You should feel a strong, warm push of air. A weak trickle means restriction.
  • The exterior damper flap doesn’t open, or it’s painted shut, or a bird has nested behind it. This is extremely common on homes where the hood sits under an eave.
  • Lint appearing around the dryer door seal — air that can’t go out the back finds another way.

Why So Many Chicagoland Vents Are Routed Badly

Basement laundry is the norm in Skokie’s brick bungalows and Des Plaines’ post-war ranches, and basement laundry creates a routing problem: the exhaust has to travel a long horizontal distance and then rise to get above grade. That leads to four recurring mistakes.

1. Flexible foil or plastic duct in concealed spaces

Flexible duct is cheap and easy to install, but the ribbed interior grabs lint, and it sags between supports so moisture pools at the low points. Code allows a short, listed transition duct from the dryer to the wall — everything concealed in the building should be smooth-wall rigid metal, typically 4-inch galvanized.

2. Runs that exceed the manufacturer’s allowance

The general limit is 35 feet of equivalent length, and every fitting eats into it. A 90-degree elbow can count as 5-15 equivalent feet depending on radius. So a “30-foot” run with four sharp elbows is effectively 60+ feet, and the dryer’s blower cannot move air that far.

3. Venting into the wrong place

A dryer must terminate outdoors. Not into a crawl space, not into the attic, not into a soffit, and not into a bucket of water — we still find all four. Dumping roughly a gallon of water per load into an attic causes mold and rotted sheathing, and the repair bill dwarfs the cost of doing the vent correctly.

4. Screws and screens inside the duct

Sheet metal screws poking into the airstream catch lint like a comb. Joints should be sealed with foil tape, not fasteners that penetrate. Insect screens at the termination clog within months and should never be used on a dryer hood.

How a Proper Cleaning Is Done

A real cleaning is not vacuuming the lint trap. Our process:

  1. Pull the dryer, disconnect the transition duct, and inspect the connection.
  2. Run a rotating brush on flexible rods through the full length of the duct, working from both the interior and the exterior hood where possible.
  3. Capture debris with a HEPA vacuum at the open end rather than blowing it into the house.
  4. Clean the dryer’s internal blower housing and lint chute — a lot of lint never makes it to the duct.
  5. Verify the exterior damper opens freely and replace it if it’s stuck or damaged.
  6. Measure airflow or at minimum confirm strong discharge at the hood, then reconnect and run a test cycle.

How Often Should You Clean It?

  • Typical family of four: once a year.

A good habit between cleanings: once a month, run the dryer and check the airflow at the exterior hood. Thirty seconds tells you whether things are trending the wrong way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I clean my dryer vent myself?

If the run is short, accessible, and rigid, a hardware-store brush kit does a decent job. Where DIY goes wrong is long or concealed runs — rods can separate inside the duct, and aggressive brushing can tear flexible duct and create a hidden leak. If you can’t see both ends, hire it out.

Is a dryer vent booster fan a good idea?

Only when the run genuinely can’t be shortened. It must be a listed dryer booster fan with a pressure or current sensing switch, not a generic inline duct fan. Boosters need cleaning too, so they add maintenance. Shortening the path is always the better first option.

My condo vents through the roof. Is that a problem?

It can be. Vertical runs are workable but the termination has to be a proper dryer cap, not a screened roof vent, and vertical runs trap lint at the base. Multi-unit buildings sometimes share a chase, which is a separate and larger issue worth having inspected.

Do ventless heat pump dryers solve this?

They eliminate the duct entirely, which is genuinely useful in condos and interior laundry closets, and they’re far more efficient. Trade-offs are longer cycle times, higher purchase price, and a condensate drain to manage. For a basement laundry with a workable vent path, a properly ducted conventional dryer is still the simpler choice.
