Unlike a sump pump, which moves clean groundwater, an ejector pump moves wastewater and solids from fixtures below the level of your sewer line up to where gravity can take over.

Putting a sump pump on a basement toilet is a mistake we still find in older finished basements. It cannot pass solids, and it isn’t in a sealed, vented basin — meaning sewer gas enters the living space. If your downstairs bath smells and the pump clogs regularly, that’s likely what you have.

How the System Works

Below-grade fixtures drain by gravity into a sealed basin — typically 18 to 30 gallons — set into the basement floor. A float switch senses the level. When it rises, the pump runs, pushing waste up a 2″ discharge line through a check valve, then into the building drain above. The check valve prevents everything falling back into the basin when the pump stops.

Two components people forget:

  • The vent. The basin must be vented, usually tied into the home’s vent stack. Without it, the pump fights a vacuum, the basin can’t fill or empty properly, and sewer gas finds its way out through the path of least resistance. An unvented basin is the most common code violation we see in DIY basement bathrooms.
  • The dedicated circuit. The pump should be on its own GFCI-protected circuit, not shared with the basement freezer that someone unplugs to plug in a vacuum.

Signs Your Ejector Pump Is Failing

  • Sewage odor in the basement. Broken basin seal, failed vent, or a dried-out floor drain trap.
  • Gurgling from the basement fixtures after the pump cycles — a venting problem.
  • Pump runs but level doesn’t drop. Impeller clogged, or the check valve failed and waste is recirculating.
  • Pump cycles constantly. Failed check valve, or a stuck float.
  • Pump never runs and the basin fills. Float switch failure (the most common single failure), tripped breaker, or seized motor.
  • Loud grinding or rattling. Debris in the impeller or worn bearings.
  • Wastewater backing up into the basement shower or toilet. Stop using all upstairs water and call immediately.

Expected life is 7 to 10 years for a residential ejector pump — shorter if it’s been fed things it shouldn’t handle. If yours is over eight years old and the basement is finished with expensive flooring, proactive replacement is cheaper than the water damage.

Undersized pumps run long, overheat, and die early. This is where a load-appropriate spec beats grabbing whatever the box store stocks.

What Kills Ejector Pumps

Almost every premature failure we service traces to one of these:

  • “Flushable” wipes. They do not break down. They wrap the impeller and the float. This is the number one cause of ejector pump failure, full stop.
  • Paper towels, dental floss, and feminine products. Same mechanism.
  • Grease from a basement wet bar or laundry sink. Cools, congeals, coats the float and the check valve.
  • Cat litter. Even the “flushable” kind settles into a cement-like layer in the basin.
  • Long idle periods. A guest bathroom used twice a year lets the seals dry out and debris settle hard. Run water down it monthly.
  • Extension cords. Voltage drop makes the motor draw more current and run hotter. Plug directly into a dedicated receptacle.

An Annual Maintenance Routine

  1. Pour five gallons of water into the basin and confirm the pump starts, empties, and stops cleanly.
  2. Listen for the check valve to seat — you should hear one thunk, not repeated cycling.
  3. Verify the basin lid gasket and all penetrations are sealed and there’s no odor.
  4. Check that the vent is open and connected.
  5. Confirm the pump is plugged directly into a working GFCI receptacle and test the GFCI.
  6. Test the high-water alarm if you have one — and install one if you don’t. It’s the cheapest insurance in the basement.

Backup Power: Worth It?

Unlike a sump pump, an ejector pump doesn’t run during storms because rain doesn’t fill the basin — you do. That said, if the basement bath is someone’s primary bathroom, or if you have a finished basement with a long outage risk, a battery backup or a generator circuit is reasonable. Given the choice between backup power for a sump versus an ejector, the sump wins every time.

Can I replace an ejector pump myself?

We’d advise against it. You’re working with raw sewage, a sealed and vented basin that must be resealed correctly, and in Illinois a licensed plumber is required for this work. The permit and inspection also protect you at resale.

Why does my basement smell like sewage?
